Lessons Learned from my Virtual Garage Sale

So I decided not to wait to start unloading some stuff. I'm having a "virtual garage sale." What is that you ask? Well, I basically list our junk in online classifieds, and then interested buyers stop by when it's convenient and purchase the items. I've been getting rid of a bunch and learning some interesting things, too. I thought I'd post a few things I've learned:
  • If you give away something free, it will be snatched up in no less than 5 minutes. Anything. I'm serious. I had someone come by to get some old rusty metal fence posts that were being used to stake a tree. An old rusted iron trellis that was in my garden also went in a matter of seconds.
  • That a "mud room" is another name for your second entry way, that you throw your dirty stuff in. And apparently a lot of furniture pieces we have are ideal for these "mud rooms". Not sure what that says about our stuff.
  • Don't say something is bronze if it's really aluminum with a bronze type finish. Found this out when a lady came to get a rooster sculpture to put in her backyard BRONZE sculpture garden. Sorry lady!
  • Bonnaroo is a 4-day music festival on a farm in Tennessee. I probably should have known about this. It's been around for 10 years and Rolling Stone called it "THE over-the-top summer festival." Discovered this when a girl bought camping stuff from me to go to said festival.
  • There are innumerable scams involving selling stuff on line of which I was not aware. But apparently the deaf guy in Houston who wants to send a cashier's check for my china cabinet is not legit. Fortunately, my wife told me that before I continued dealing with him...
I'm sure there will be a part 2 to this post, as I have quite a bit of stuff left to sell. What about you? Any good stories to share from selling stuff on-line?

  2. It is hip and much more attractive to call something you have that looks old, "vintage"!

  3. Thanks Christina. I had fun writing it! And I like the "vintage" idea. I'm gonna use that for sure!
