Vision Trip Recap - Part 4

The next day we packed up and headed back to Addis. We had planned two days in the capital before getting on the plane home. Knowing that Ethiopia will be our home next year, we wanted to try out some restaurants and visit the markets. It was sort of a reconnaissance mission - see what sort of things we will be able to buy in Addis so we'll know what to bring and what to buy.

We enjoyed our two days in Addis, and the kids were troopers. Some highlights were:

Burgers at Sishu - a restaurant in an old house tucked away in central Addis. Great American-style burgers cooked over an open flame. The "Snuffers" of Addis.

Macchiatos at Kaldi's - this is the Ethiopian version of Starbucks - even the logo looks like it! They have great coffee drinks and sprees which is an Ethiopian smoothie that is layers of blended mango, papaya, avocado, or whatever fruit is fresh that day. (see pic above left). A large latte at Kaldi's costs about 15 birr - or about 1 US dollar!

Island Breeze - another restaurant that caters to Americans. Good onion rings, pizza, and yes, even chips & salsa.

We also checked out the shopping at Friendship Mall and went to a few grocery stores just to see what our options would be. The grocery stores in Addis have most of the things we're used to. One interesting thing was the chicken. Local chicken was sold right next to steroid-enhanced imported chicken. See if you can tell which is which!
