We have been told by older, wiser missionaries to be certain that we are called to Ethiopia because our calling will be the only thing that keeps us there during the difficult times. So, with a big confident smile on my face I say, "Yes, I am called". Then I walk away and my thoughts run wild. Am I really called? Can I know for sure? How was I called? How do I know the call is to Ethiopia? to Soddo?
Well, I didn't hear a loud voice from God or even a gentle whisper that said, "Go to Ethiopia!" or "Be a missionary!". So, does this mean that I shouldn't go? I hope not!
Then, why did I decide to go? For all of these reasons: God loves me and I love Him. I am a Christian. God tells Christians to go and share His Word with the nations. I love Ethiopia. I love Ethiopians. I have an Ethiopian son. And I married a man who wants to do mission work overseas.
This may sound too simple but this is it! I think there are too many Christians not doing missions because they are sitting around waiting for the call. God gave the call in the Great Commission in Matthew 28 and He said the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few in Luke 10.
I like David Sitton's comments in his blogpost "Don't complicate the missionary call".
"You can’t go wrong by trying to go. Trust the Lord to direct your moving feet. Dramatic calls to ministry are the exception. If you have it in your heart to go, then go. Then, lean on the sovereignty of God to get you where he wants you in the harvest. Don’t worry about “running ahead of God.” You aren’t that quick!"
love the post. agreed!
